IF EDUCATION IS A RIGHT AND NOT A PRIVILEGE, THEN, BEING FAIR TO THE GHANAIAN STUDENT IS EQUALLY A RIGHT AND NOT A PRIVILEGE. TRUTH BE SAID, WE MUST WRITE NUGS RIGHT. (AGENDA WRITE NUGS RIGHT) ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has its origin from the Union of Gold Coast Students in West Africa. The Union of Gold Coast Students in West Africa (UGCS-WA) was founded in the 1930s originally to end British Colonial Rule and to further be the fundamentum of achieving independence for the Gold Coast. In 1962, the UGCS-WA had began metamorphosis, a drive to today's National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS). Reminiscing history, Professor Anselmus Kludze was the first President of NUGS, serving from 1962-1963. Mr. F.Y.I Fiagbe was the General Secretary to the Union with other serving executives as Mr. Easmon, Mr. Kodwo Carr among others. Let me be quick to equally defend that, the union was however to be "officially" recognized somewhere in 1964. Notwithstand

MENTAL HEALTH DAY 2018!!

Image
The Mental Health Authority has launched the 2018 Mental Health Week under the theme; “Young people and mental health in a changing world”, on the 8th October, 2018. The week-long event, which is supported by the Ministry of Health is to educate and create awareness on the dangers of mental health to the society and the country at large. Recent statistics have indicated that half of all mental illnesses begin at the age of 14, with most going undetected. It also named depression as the third leading cause of mental illness among adolescents with suicide being the second leading cause of death. Although this has led to a growing acceptance for people to build mental resilience at an early age, much must be done to create a better understanding of what mental illness is and why it should be given prominence in our daily discussions. Speaking at the launch of this year’s event, Medical Director of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, Dr. Augustina Pinaman Apau stressed on the need to encou

10th October Mental Health Day

Mental Health Day World Mental Health Day is observed on 10th October, with the overall objective to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health. According to the World Health Organization, it is estimated that of the 21.6 million people living in Ghana, 650,000 are suffering from a severe mental disorder and 2,166,000 are suffering from a mild to moderate form of mental disorder. Unfortunately, only 28% of those suffering from mental disorders are believed to be receiving treatment. As a country, we need to wake up and create awareness for better health care, especially for those living with mental illness. Anyone can be a victim of depression, schizophrenia , affective psychosis, brain syndrome and more. We must stop discrimination and stigmatization against people with mental illness by showing them love and support. Story by Ebenezer Junior
