IF EDUCATION IS A RIGHT AND NOT A PRIVILEGE, THEN, BEING FAIR TO THE GHANAIAN STUDENT IS EQUALLY A RIGHT AND NOT A PRIVILEGE. TRUTH BE SAID, WE MUST WRITE NUGS RIGHT.

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has its origin from the Union of Gold Coast Students in West Africa. The Union of Gold Coast Students in West Africa (UGCS-WA) was founded in the 1930s originally to end British Colonial Rule and to further be the fundamentum of achieving independence for the Gold Coast.

In 1962, the UGCS-WA had began metamorphosis, a drive to today's National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS). Reminiscing history, Professor Anselmus Kludze was the first President of NUGS, serving from 1962-1963. Mr. F.Y.I Fiagbe was the General Secretary to the Union with other serving executives as Mr. Easmon, Mr. Kodwo Carr among others. Let me be quick to equally defend that, the union was however to be "officially" recognized somewhere in 1964. Notwithstanding, it had fully undergone metamorphosis in 1962.

At the 'renaming' or 'rebranding' of the UGCS-WA to become NUGS, the vision of the Fathers were to;
(a) champion the interest of Ghanaian students.
(b) protect and safeguard the rights and interests of students.
(c) offer a common platform for the discussion of issues and problems affecting students.
Fast forward, virtually 56years of the existence of NUGS, we ask ourselves whether or not any of those visions have been achieved?

History accounts that, in the struggle to chalking the successes of the visions so mentioned above, the first of the union's executives headed by Prof. Anselmus Kludge were arrested and imprisoned without trial under the Krobo Edusei's tyrannically proposed, Nkrumah implemented Preventive Detention Act (PDA) of 1958. Let me be clear here; Prof. Anselmus, Mr. Fiagbe, Mr. Easmon and Mr. Kodwo Carr were not arrested for fraud, embezzlement of funds, political jingoism or for any crime against the state or humanity. Rather, they were arrested because they had organized a massive nationwide demonstration against the "tyrannical rule" of a Pan-Africanist leader, whose certain actions were erroneously wild on the Ghanaian student. Simply put, they were detained for no reason but that, they stood in defense of their fellow students in the struggle. The Ghanaian student leader today, must bow in total shame that he/she won't dare stand for fellow students like the Fathers did for us.

Permit me to conclude by being straightforward, without any fear or favor that, if indeed we think that there should still exist a union called NUGS; If we indeed still uphold that championing the interest of the Ghanaian student is worth it; If we still agree that education is a right and not a privilege then, being fair to the Ghanaian student must equally be seen as a right and not a privilege. We have every reason to feel misericordia for how destructive we have been to our union so that we can join hands again to write NUGS right. Truthfully, NUGS must be written right.
