NUGS HONORS FARMERS ON THE OCCASION OF NATIONAL FARMERS DAY, URGES GOVERNMENT TO CONTINUE SUPPORTING THE AGRICULTURAL SECTOR.

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) wishes to on this day convey this message in honor of all farmers in Ghana, "whose toil on a daily basis, feeds us, keeps us alive, and plays an important role towards the development of our country". Ghana, with a total land area of 23.9million hectares has about 57% of it suitable for agriculture, and with 60% of her labour force engaged in this sector. It is a fact, that, this sector has the "potential to develop into a multi billion dollar industry" which would be the propeller of national development. However, the challenges facing this sector seem to far outweigh the strengths therefore impeding the progress expected.

In Ghana, the agricultural sector is faced with numerous challenges including;
1. Poor road networks linking farming communities to urban market centres.
2. Lack of storage and agro processing facilities.
3. Inadequate technical know-how on modern mechanized systems of farming.
4. Invasion of pests and diseases in our farms, bringing huge loses to farmers.
5. Inadequate irrigation infrastructure and machinery for farming.
6. A declined interest by young people to venture into agriculture.
7. Inaccessible financial support for farmers. Etc.

Previous governments have had positive stance especially relating to making agriculture appealing to the citizenry. Notwithstanding, it has been excessively difficult for same to curb many of the challenges facing the sector due to so many reasons including corruption, lack of dedication to and unclear policy directions, lack of engagement by government with the people who matter (farmers) and misappropriation of priorities. It is quite appreciative the current struggles being made by government to advance and diversify this sector for national development.

NUGS, in accordance with Article 13(e) of its constitution would want to assure government of support towards realising the vision of a Ghana Beyond Aid through education and agriculture. We wish to therefore use this opportunity to inform government on plans by the Programmes and Projects Secretariat of our union in drafting and putting into action a comprehensive policy vision themed "NUGS IN AGRICULTURE; PURSUING GHANA BEYOND AID".

All said and done, the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), today, wishes to honor the Ghanaian farmer for the toil in feeding the nation amidst the numerous challenges. We urge the government to make much more considerable efforts in curbing the challenges earlier mentioned to foster a more conducive agricultural sector. NUGS also urges the youth of Ghana to fully engage themselves in agricultural activities especially animal farming, food crop production and cash cropping. These would not only create wealth but also promote food security and in the long run foster national development.
