NATIONAL READING DAY

National Reading Day.

On 25th September 2018, Worldreader organised a day event to commemorate National Reading Day at British Council. The event was supported by the Ministry of Education (Republic of Ghana), as well as local and international stakeholders working in the education sector especially in the area of reading.

The chairperson, Naa Korkor Aadzieoyi I, Queenmother of Adabaraka, expressed the need for traditional leaders to visit schools in their community to encourage the children to learn and read books. She has visited schools in the past and knows it helps the children.

She talked about how reading improves discipline and memory. Studies show if you don't read often, it becomes extremely difficult to recall facts you have read.

She talked about her current Read for Me project with Ama Atta Aidoo creative writing center. The purpose is to help children in the community improve their reading especially through creative books.

The cofounder and CEO of Worldreader was pleased to be in Ghana. He said Worldreader is currently working in 106 schools and 15 community libraries in Ghana and has impacted the lives of over 17,000 active readers by providing 11,359 devices delivering over 1.4 million books.

He promised to achieve more and encouraged parents and teachers to motivate children to read more books.

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Deputy Minister of Education, said "government is promising to make reading a must at the basic level as a foundation of education".

The Deputy minister asked parents and stakeholders to help make a difference in the lives of children by motivating them to read a book a week. This will improve their language skills as well as listening ability which will enable them to develop self esteem. He thanked Worldreader for promoting reading, especially digital reading in Ghana.

The event concluded with a presentation of essay competition awards and a lovely song by OKyeame Kwame featuring Sante and Sir Kwame, titled "Read" which had participants singing along.
